The NVR is where a camera system becomes a system: it records the streams, enforces the retention period, serves playback and exports the clip somebody eventually asks for. Getting it wrong is expensive in a specific way — you find out at the moment you need footage that the disks filled and overwrote it a week early.

Two numbers size an NVR: channel count and recording bandwidth. Everything else — built-in PoE, RAID, rack mount — follows from where it lives and how much the footage is worth.

Channels, bandwidth and headroom

Channel count is the obvious limit, but recording bandwidth usually binds first: sixteen 8 MP cameras at full frame rate can exceed the throughput of a recorder rated for sixteen channels at lower resolution. Check the stated incoming bandwidth in Mbps against the sum of your camera main streams, and buy channels above what the site needs today.

Storage and retention are one calculation

Retention days, stream bitrate and channel count determine capacity — there is no rule of thumb that survives contact with a real bitrate. Specify surveillance-rated drives designed for continuous write, and use RAID where losing the array would be a compliance problem rather than an inconvenience.

PoE-integrated or separate switch

Recorders with built-in PoE ports are the fastest way to stand up a small site: the cameras plug straight into the back on an isolated camera subnet. On larger sites, a separate managed PoE switch is better — you get proper VLAN separation, per-port power control and the ability to grow past the recorder's port count.

What is the difference between an NVR and a DVR?
An NVR records IP cameras over the network, while a DVR digitises analogue coax cameras. New installations are almost always NVR-based; DVRs and hybrid recorders exist mainly to keep an existing coax cable plant in service.
How many hard drives does an NVR need?
It depends on retention rather than channel count. Calculate total bitrate across all cameras, multiply by the retention period, and add capacity for RAID overhead if the footage is business critical.
Can I use a normal desktop hard drive in an NVR?
It will work and it will fail early. Surveillance-rated drives are specified for continuous sequential writing and multi-drive vibration, which is exactly the workload an NVR produces around the clock.
