Wall cabinets exist to get a patch panel, a switch and a router off the floor and behind a lock, in buildings that never had a comms room. They are the standard answer for retail units, clinics, classrooms, small offices and residential distribution points.

Sizes usually run 4U to 18U, in shallow (about 300–450 mm) and deep (about 500–600 mm) variants.

How to choose wall-mounted

Shallow or deep

Shallow cabinets are fine for patch panels, a compact switch and a router. As soon as a PoE switch, a small UPS or an NVR is involved you need a deep cabinet — and you need clearance in front of the wall for the door to open fully.

Mounting and load

Wall cabinets must be fixed into structural wall material with fixings rated for the loaded weight, not just the empty cabinet. Check the manufacturer's static load rating and keep heavy equipment out — a UPS on a wall bracket is a floor-standing cabinet's job.

Ventilation

An enclosed wall cabinet with a PoE switch inside gets hot. Choose perforated doors, add a roof fan kit where the cabinet is sealed or in a warm room, and avoid mounting directly above heat sources.

What U height should a wall cabinet be?
Count your equipment in U, then add two or three spare units. A patch panel, switch, router and one spare U typically lands on a 6U or 9U cabinet; add a small UPS or NVR and you are at 12U or more.
Can I put a UPS in a wall-mounted cabinet?
Only a small one, and only if the cabinet's load rating and the wall allow it. Rack UPS units are heavy and are normally installed at the bottom of a floor-standing cabinet.
