How to choose 48-port

Power supplies and redundancy

High-density PoE switches often support dual or field-replaceable power supplies. If the switch feeds door access, emergency phones or CCTV, redundant supplies plus a correctly sized UPS matter more than the extra ports.

Uplink and aggregation

Plan two 10G uplinks minimum, aggregated to the core. On campuses with fibre between buildings you will also need the matching SFP+ transceivers at both ends and the right fibre type for the distance.

Is one 48-port switch better than two 24-port switches?
One 48-port switch is cheaper per port and simpler to manage, but it is also a single point of failure for the whole floor. Two 24-port switches split the risk and let you place them closer to the cable runs.
How much rack space and cooling do they need?
Physically 1U, but plan for depth and airflow: a fully loaded PoE switch can dissipate several hundred watts of heat, so it needs unobstructed front-to-back airflow in the cabinet.
