Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) is the first generation designed around the 6 GHz band as a first-class citizen: 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM, and Multi-Link Operation so a client can use two bands at once instead of choosing one. In practice the gains show up as lower latency and better behaviour in dense environments, not just a higher headline number.

Deploying it properly changes the wiring, not just the access point: most Wi-Fi 7 units want 802.3bt power and a 2.5G or faster uplink to be worth the upgrade.

How to choose wi-fi 7 access points

The switch is part of the Wi-Fi 7 decision

A Wi-Fi 7 access point on a gigabit PoE+ port is capped by the port, not the radio. Plan multi-gigabit switch ports (2.5G or 10G) and an 802.3bt power budget before ordering the access points — retrofitting the switch afterwards costs more than specifying it once.

6 GHz coverage behaves differently

6 GHz carries more capacity over shorter distances and is attenuated more by walls than 5 GHz. Expect a denser access-point layout than a like-for-like Wi-Fi 5 design, and treat any existing survey as a starting point rather than a plan.

Client mix decides the payback

Wi-Fi 7 is fully backwards compatible, so older clients keep working — but they gain nothing. The upgrade pays for itself where there are many modern devices in a small area: conference rooms, lecture halls, hotel lobbies, warehouses with modern handhelds.

Indoor, outdoor and mounting

Indoor models are ceiling or wall mounted and usually ship with a bracket; outdoor models add an IP-rated enclosure, wider operating temperature range and often external antenna options. Outdoor units also need surge protection on the Ethernet run.

Do Wi-Fi 7 access points need new switches?
Usually yes, to get the benefit. Most models expect 802.3bt (PoE++) power and a 2.5G or faster uplink; on a gigabit PoE+ port they will run but the wired link becomes the bottleneck.
Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it over Wi-Fi 6E?
In dense, latency-sensitive environments with modern clients, yes — Multi-Link Operation and 320 MHz channels are meaningful. For a low-density office with mostly older laptops, Wi-Fi 6 or 6E hardware is usually the better value.
Will my existing devices work with a Wi-Fi 7 access point?
Yes. 802.11be is backwards compatible with Wi-Fi 6/6E, Wi-Fi 5 and older clients, which connect at their own maximum standard.
